Backflow prevention is about stopping unsafe water from flowing back into a clean water system. A backflow preventer is a device that allows water to pass through in one direction and then prevents it from passing back in the same direction. They are mainly used to stop any unsafe water from returning through the system to contaminate clean water.

Backflow preventers come in different shapes and sizes, they can be a simple check valve that allows the water to run one way or they can be more complex and effective with a system of valves, vents and check systems to make sure the backflow unit is working efficiently.

When it comes to irrigation systems, backflow preventers are very important especially if your water comes from a drinkable source. In South Australia there are stringent regulations on backflow prevention and testing and all backflow prevention devices must be installed in compliance with the national plumbing standard AS/NZS 3500.1.

Backflow prevention devices come in three hazard ratings from High, Medium and Low. High and Medium devices must be testable due to the nature of the hazard and must be commissioned and tested annually by a licensed plumber. At Pretty Plumbing we can help you with all your backflow prevention requirements from selecting and installing the correct device for your requirements and handling all the licenced testing in accordance with state and federal regulations.
